The County Fair and Questions for you who know....

There will be no knitting content today. We went to the County fair yesterday. I love seeing all the animals. I got to listen to a calf's heartbeat in the Education Barn. My goodness it was so slow. I can't image how slowly a cow's heart beats. I'm coming from my NICU perspective where neonates heart rate at rest can easily be 170s. As humans age their heartrate slows.

Is this true of Bovines?

The 4H Dairy group wears all whites. It is tradition a farmer told me.

You know me and the horse fascination. The draft horse judging was so fun. When they clip they CLOP loud. I have some video but don't know how to put it her. So imagine.......that heavenly sound.

The draft horses were not very calm. They are huge. They could do a lot of damage if out of control. These two were not kidding around in the barn. They made the riding ring horses look like ponies.

This beautiful painting won a blue ribbon in the craft barn. I love it. Look at her beautiful wrinkles. Her loving open hands! Is she calling her great grandchild to her?

And finally for Delighted Hands and Nancy; a wonderful dark quilt.

If you want to chime in please do, I have a few questions

*We are new to water softerners, and the water feels so slippery. I dont' want to drink it.

So do any of you use a reverse osmosis machine or do you buy bottled water. ? also I'm having trouble seeing a quote for Hinkley and Schmitt on line without giving them information.

Around how much do you pay?

*Do you really have to change your hummingbird food frequently?

*This house had a convection oven. My mom had one and loved it. Any words of wisdom about that since she cant help me?

We have what I believe is indoor outdoor carpet on the porch. Should I shampoo it?

*finally,

We ordered a mattress from Tuft and Needle and they deliver the mattress in a rolled up tube. So far it is awesome. No problem getting it to the upstairs. Great feel.

Once you open it, the mattress begins to expand.

Have you heard of this kind of mattress?

Any other words of wisdom for me?

Draft horses are huge and powerful, but definitely beautiful. Only riding horses on display at the local County Fair.

The painting is beautiful - when did we become a culture that worships the young, wrinkle-free face? I see wisdom and love in that beautiful face.

My nephew and his wife purchased one of those mattresses several months ago, and they love it.

I love draft horses. Usually they ARE pretty calm.

Steve and I rode drum horses last year. What a sweet bunch! Mine "sang" every time the water we were riding in went over her back and cooled her. She LOVED that.

I love going to fairs, and draft horses are a real fave of mine. As Dee said, they are usually pretty mellow.

We have a convection oven, and really like it. Ours came with instructions that said it will cook things more quickly most of the time, and at a lower temp. It suggested (in general) to set the temp 50 degrees lower than normal. So if you have a recipe that says to use 350 degrees for 40 minutes, we set ours on 300 and check after about 25 minutes. I'm sure like everything else, they vary. You could do a Google search for your brand and see if there is an online users guide.

Your post is so timely. I was just at Daughter's and I took a bar of my soap and since she has city water, not a well with a softener like we do, I was amazed at how different a soap experience it was. My water is very soft thanks to our new $4000 system and it feels like dog spit when you take bath. Rather slimey. The soap lathers beautifully but is a bear to rinse off. We can't drink the water or use it for watering plants per instructions from the company that installed it but at least it isn't staining everything and smelling like rotten eggs anymore. Beach water is terrible. We buy water in gallons at the grocery store for us to drink and The Mister fills up the containers at his Mom's-who has city water-for the pets. Needless to say we do a lot of recycling. Our front hose is not hooked up to the system so we use it for watering plants. Sigh....it's not much fun but it is what it is and at least we don't have a water bill.

Thanks for taking me to the fair! I have not been for a few years, and you remind me how much I enjoy going. We drink Kangen filtered water at different strengths in our household and just use tap water for showers and plant watering. I just spot cleaned the indoor/outdoor carpeting we had [a can of beets did not stain it!] We have had some issues using our convection oven for cookie baking on Silpat mats, but in general manage to bake what we need to...in spite of not understanding what we are doing :) xx

Oh, I love the quilt-thanks for the picture! We have a mega mineral filtering system instead of a water softener. I love that but it is an investment well worth it.
I have a memory foam mattress that came like that-I love it still and it's been years!

Wow, you are all moved in. I am impressed that you making back weekly to see your mom. That is incredibly kind of you.
My husband and his family are crazy about hummingbirds so we have one of those red feeders in our backyard. Keith fills it with a sugar-water combination. He refills it as needed. He says they always drink all of it.
Give me a week or two to adjust to high school and we can set up a meet up!

What a fun time you had! I'll have to Google draft horses. How neat you got to listen to the cow's heartbeat. The water here tastes different than in SF; we got used to it but we always use a PUR filter on our kitchen sink faucet.

It looks like a wonderful time at the fair. How fun! I just washed my hummingbird feeder out today because they have flown south already. They usually drink it all and I don't have to worry about it getting old. We have a soft water system and love it. We drink and cook with the water too. We only buy water for drinking and cooking at the lake because the well water there tastes like metal this year for some reason. My oven is both convection and regular baking. I find myself using the regular bake much more than convection because things never turned out right when I used the convection option.

I loved seeing the animals at your fair. We have hummingbirds that stay here all year and you do need to put fresh food in at least every 5-7 days or it will actually get icky and harm the birds. We even have to thaw our feeder when it freezes in the winter for the little birds that depend on it to live. If the outdoor carpet is still good but dirty, try cleaning it. But putting down a new one is also an option. Have fun getting to know your new home. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
