Socks...because

Ahhh the rainbow.
Ahh the fences in Kentucky.
Ahhh to flowering trees on my block.

Today I'm going to give you the reasons I love to knit socks:

because: buttons and I don't mix.
because:  one skein of yarn makes a garment
because: you don't have to change needle sizes during the project
because: you don't have to purl if you don't want to for most of the sock
because: I love portability
because: I live in a day and age where there is more sock yarn than ever before to purchase and make into socks
because: giving socks as a gift is pretty nifty
because: you can make them as simple or as complex as you wish
because: there are whole books devoted to sock patterns
because: you can make a garment with one strand of yarn
that is just amazing
i love that part
A sock can be one skein of yarn without any breaks or ties or ends to weave in!

because: I can knit according to the seasons in any seasonal colors that excite me.  They do excite me.

because: you can fair isle socks or not
because: socks are socks whether you are knitting for a baby or a giant person's bigfoot
because: socks get holes in them and you get to knit more socks
and
because you don't have to put a zipper in them
and because one of the very few , lets say two, parts of my body that will allow me to wear wool and not itch
is my feet!

Why do you love to knit socks?

I have not knit socks.
Afraid of knitting on dpns

I have socks on the needles at all times. I love socks and everyone seems to love to get them as gifts too. A lady at the doctors office yesterday offered to buy the ones I was working on. (They are already destined for a certain person so no.)
To suburban prep...dpn's look a lot harder than they are. You just knit, round and round and round. If you would rather not use dpn's there is magic loop, socks on two needles. The possibilities are out there. Don't give up!
Sock love is abundant in the knitting world right now and I'm enjoying all of the yarns available too.
Blessings,
Betsy

Kathy - you hit all the points I can think of! I love knitting socks even though I am new to it. And Suburban Prep - DPNs are not as tricky as they look...each time I cast on it is easier and easier. Also, there are now very small circular needles available for knitting socks. I bought one but have yet to try it because I've found (rather amazed myself) that I really like DPNs! The hardest part is to not buy ALL the sock yarn I would like to buy - ha-ha.

Well.. truth is.. I did one pair and it was a miserable experience. But your joy is infectious and I might try a 2nd pair. Then I can blame you if it makes me crazy.. lol. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

I've only ever knit one sock and it was my first project! One of my goals this year is to knit a pair and I hope I become addicted to it!

I enjoy knitting socks and agree with your reasons. So much beautiful sock yarn out there.

I'm with you on all the reasons socks are the coolest. I am in a sock lull at the moment since I just had to pack away what seemed like a billion pairs. I sure don't need any more ever but I know I'll be picking up sock yarn at the MDSW next week.
A lot of very good reasons to love knitting socks!!

Oh and I forgot: my dropped stitches are almost always in stockinette and I can fix them..!

For many of those same reasons!

I don't have to worry TOO much about fit. There's a lot of wiggle room in socks.

So many beautiful indie sock yarns to choose from.

And because when you knit socks in public, people think you are absolutely a genius!

Great reasons, Kathy! However, I am a terrible procrastinator for sock #2. What I love about most knitting is its portability; that's why I don't sew a lot any more also. Great photos, BTW.

I love how sock yarn is reasonably priced for the most part and you get the best bang out of your buck. Plus, one can go full out crazy with sock yarn and I'm giving permission to everyone to have an unlimited sock yarn stash!

Great reasons for knitting socks. Looking at my sock yarn stash, it's easy to determine that I enjoy knitting socks.

I feel your love of the sock knit :) I love the portability too. I love that I secretly have a little bag of happy inside my purse or gym bag at all times. But your reasons hit on the head pretty well. :)

Favorite photo #2!! Love it!!

I cannot believe how comprehensive your list is! I can't think of any reason you left out. I think the things I like best about knitting socks are: their portability; that they make great gifts; that sock yard is endlessly beautiful; that they are a great way to practice new skills, like lace and cables.

Oh, and they are so much fun to wear!
All of that and also you end up with lots of left over bits to make a really cool blanket with!!!! :-)

so so so true! I love socks because it's potato chip knitting for me. I have my sock recipe memorized. I can have warm feet. I love sock yarn. it's portable :)
i like socks because they are the perfect way to use those fantastic skeins of hand-dyed yarn that just wont work for anything else.

Srcks are the best for all the reasons you name and more but it is a reasonable size for experimenting and that is often the charge I need but plain is the perfect oasis for a tired brain. (I now have too many socks so I am branching out to the flip flop socks!)

The reasons I don't knit socks include living in Florida where I rarely wear them and second sock syndrome, I suffer from it horribly. Love your list.
