In Plain English

Good Knit Pal Karen gave me the book
SWEATER DESIGN IN PLAIN ENGLISH
just in time.

I had cast on for my vest but the cables I was
working pulled the work in.

Karen discovered that I'm better without a pattern; I think so too in many cases.

Seems Maggie Righetti knew just how to get me to
rip it out and start over.  She mentions that BIG cables
put weight on you.
That did it.  I ripped it out so fast and furious
it almost never was -

I've cast on with more stitches to account for the pull
and I've decreased to just one center cable in the back.
PHEW, who knew big cables made you look fatter?

Any one else have some slimming knit tips ???
(Not eating cookies while I knit is another one of my tips)

Yes, that cookie thing will get you (as it did me). I had never heard that about cables but I guess that is the reason I have never worn a cabled sweater. They just never look right on me!

I think it is exciting to knit without a pattern. Sometimes a pattern gets in the way of creativity.

I think you are hysterical, I think they might be right about the large cables, I have never thought of it as cables kind of drive me batty. Hugs,

This time of year is hard for any knit garment, hand made or not to look good, while I'm shoveling in "the good life". I love that yarn, it's perfect for a cozy vest. I love this vest / gauge / sweater experimentation you've got going on. Thanks for letting us watch you develop your methods!

I have to eat cookies when I knit. It's a rule.
As for big cables...hmmm. I never thought of it. I am working on a sweater with teeny tiny cables right now so if it's true I'm glad.
As soon as the holiday crazies are over I am knitting more vests. The one I have, I have been wearing to death. I never realized they are so handy when it is chilly but you still have to deal with hot flashes. Love, love, love them.

Personally, I think any cabling adds weight to the wearer - look at the fishermen's sweaters where all the men look like beefy, football players. I never purchase, knit, or wear ANYTHING with cabling - no thank you.

Never heard that about cables either. But bulky sweaters are warm...and bulky. ;>)

I've not heard that about the cables... but I'll use it as a good excuse. ;) Oh, the cookies... the candy... the pizza... LOTS of things... {sigh} the pounds pile on so easily. Look forward to seeing that vest!! blessings ~ tanna

I read Big Girl Knits. It talks about what sweater designs make a lady look bigger. Bigger needle designs do. You have to go with smaller gauge. I also know that some of the ombre can make you look bigger, too.

Interesting! I love that you're more comfortable without a pattern. Can't wait to see how this grows.
