What I've Learned

I've learned the Watermelon Knitpicks is busy yarn.
I've learned from friend, expert Knitter, Karen-
that all needle sizers are not the same.

A ruler is a ruler is a ruler and and Inch is an inch.
However, a size 2 needle on a Boye needle scale is not
necessarily a size 2 needle on a Knitting Central needle scale.

Karen brought me her grandmother's plastic needles as a gift.  Connie was her granny and she was a knitter.  We were sizing them into groups...and found

A size 2 needle on one scale was a 3 on another....
and so on.

As Karen pointed out, what matters is gauge and that all your needles just have to be the same size when you are working on a project.

I've learned that a kitten who cannot see will fool you into thinking she can....
until she falls off the bed...
oops.

Happy Monday!

HMMMM... I had suspected my Boye needle sizer was off. You get what you pay for on these, I think. I will pull out all 3 sizers and do a little comparison.

Yes, watermelon is busy yarn, but I love the look in socks. I find busy yarn helps keep me tuned into the knitting. Nothing worse than a plain sock knit with plain yarn.... YAWN.

Have a wonderful week, Kathy!

I've wondered about the needle sizers too. I noticed they weren't all the same, and I find that a bit frustrating. The watermelon yarn may be busy, but for socks it works, if you're not using a fancy stitch. The little kitty is so darned cute.

A friend of mine who use to own a yarn shop was gifted with a huge amount of circular knitting needles from a former customer. The stash included needles that also belonged to the customer's mother who use to knit for clothing shops in New York City. These women were serious knitters. I had a pittance compared to them and my friend told me one day to come and help myself to whatever I was lacking, to build my needle supply. To make a long story short, I was grateful, but what a headache sorting and sizing those things. I also suspected that all needles were not what they should be. Thank goodness I was using just 1 needle sizer or I would have surely ripped out my hair! Thank you though for confirming this, so I am not crazy after all. I guess gauge does become more important than ever. Have a happy and safe 4th.

That kitty is too cute! I know for sure that some needles aren't the same size: some very old size six are marked 4.25mm and the newer ones 4.00mm, so might it be the needles rather than the sizer?

The Watermelion KnitPicks is a beautiful busy!!

You are so right--I have three needle sizers and none of them agree on size. Gauge is the thing.

Such a cute kitty!

Hmmmm...I figured sizers were sizers were sizers. That's kind of disappointing. Glad all my needles are well marked so I don't have to USE a sizer.

I have a size 12 pair of wooden needles gifted to me from a friend, they were her grandmother's. They don't make size 12 anymore.....
Hugs to you and that sweet baby kitten.

Huh!? I was distracted by a cute kitten.

I didn't realize there was so much of a difference in the rulers. I need to check mine.

Confirms what I suspected. What I've learned - stick to one needle sizer and pretend ignorance.

Some needle sizers are "rounded up" and some are based on mm, so a US 2 can also be a US 2.5

Oh my gosh... another thing to be afraid of! What if I'm knitting the wrong gauge because my needle sizer is off!?

good lessons - well except the kitty falling.

And yes - I think it has to do with American and Imperial measures. When needles were in sizes. I think in metric when picking needles out. g

Even an inch can be off by a bit on different rulers. When I did a lot more quilting I was told to use the same ruler thruout the whole quilt. Otherwise my squares could be off.......As if crafting wasn't exciting enough...

Really rulers are off too? Geez. I guess your quilt help would be safest..use the same rulers.

That just confirms what I suspected... not all needle gauges are created equal!

And rulers too!? I've wondered before...

Aren't animals amazingly adaptable??!
