Indian Summer ....FireHouse tales

Today is about as gorgeous as it gets in Chicago.  It is Indian Summer.

Windows: open
Cats: on porch
Sun: Streaming through what leaves are left on the trees.
There won't be many, if ANY, more of these days for months to come.
THESE are my afterthought heel socks in progress.  I like all this straight stockinette.  I married some shibu with some lornas.  I alternate yarns each row.  I think they will look great with jeans.

Even our public golf course is dressed up for Fall.

Fireman just drove by in the Engine and tooted at me.  He's so darn cute.  He has to work a double shift today , 48 hours, to get some time off next week.  It is such a glorious day and he's stuck at work....at least he can get out a teeny tiny bit today.  I think they are off to the grocery store......
when you work a double shift you have to buy treats for all of the firehouses that day.

Since its October and Fire prevention and all that maybe I should tell you a few stories?

Stories about skunks in the middle of the night......
Fireman often gets called by families who have a distinct smell of burning in their house....and it turns out  to be skunk musk.

Fireman also used to get lots of calls by families whose smoke alarms are going off....due to a spider walking through the mechanism.  They trip it off.

Fireman gets calls from people who hear a smoke alarm going off OUTSIDE their house.....this is particulary important to some people....Fireman has to scout around at zero dark thirty and has found more than one detector thrown out in the neighbor's garbage chirping...

Fireman had to help an elderly woman the other day.  See, Fireman has to go to calls whether he 's on the ambulance or not.  They send two rigs or more because they need lifting power and the like.  He told her he was going to roll her over, to move her.
She smiled at him and said, "I haven't been rolled by a man in  a LOOONG time" .

It is not all about Fires and ceilings falling down, thank God.  Sometimes it is more about not getting bit....by unruly citizens who are drunk or high or both.....

These are the stories Fireman must remember.  There are so many more that are not to be published here....
ha!  And Fireman does NOT like Chicago Fire or any fire shows....except the old original

with Roy and Johnny.......

This has to be one of my fave posts you have done! (But I have to confess that I love them all!) I love firemen because more than once my dear elderly mother had to call the fire dept. to have them come and help my Dad up when he would fall. I love what the dear woman said to your fireman. My Dad just wouldn't stop apologizing and worrying about taking them away from someone who really might need them.

The lady's comment to Fireman almost made me spew tea out of my nose! Too funny!

I love the socks AND the technique you are using.

I love the fire stories and I can believe Fireman doesn't like the fire shows. Fireman son doesn't either!!

My best friend loves to tell the story about taking care of her Father, a large man, who was quite ill. She was just out of the shower and had nothing but a towel wrapped around her, and he fell on her as she tried to help him. When her daughter called the fire department guess who came--my fireman son of course! She says he looked straight at her, on the floor in the all together and said, "Don't you worry, we'll take care of him Ma'am." Don't you love Firefighters!!

You made lots of progress on your fun socks; maybe the heel will be kind of like doing a thumb on a mitten? Great stories! Where would we be without our firemen?!

When I lived in Battle Creek we had a house in an old neighborhood. All the houses were built about 1900 and the attics were the home to many bats.

The lady across the street would call the fire department when one of the bats got into her living area. And they came with a big fire truck and removed the bat.

We kept a fish net on each floor for our bats, but usually if you opened a window they would fly out.

We had a spider trip our fire alarm once... In the middle of the night when we were all sleeping...

Love the socks! Great yarn combo.
