Photography question

I know you usually come to a blog to get answers. When you come to this one you get questions! Ha ha ha ! Pretend friends rule.

Today I have this question: I have too many images on my mac computer. I should save them. What should I save them to?
A memory stick would need a lot of memory? Should I buy a bunch of little memory sticks? Should I save them to a disc?

All of you who are contest entrants won't have to wait long for the winner announcement. I'll pick soon.

The image is of the lap prayer shawl for my dad. Fireman built us a lovely fire pit this week. I wanted to used it as backround before the first fire!

Fireman predicts that my dad won't use the lap shawl. He says no self respecting man would use a lap shawl. We'll see who is right! My father is a outdoors, sporting, golfing, man. My Fireman used to think it was odd that I grew up in a house with a rifle cabinet. My mother keeps the house so cold you could hang meat in it on any given day. I think he'll use it!
I'll talk to you in the comments. :)

We talked about getting an exsternal hard drive you can put all your patterns and music on it and put it in the closet then it frees up the space on your computor and then if your computor ever crashes you lose nothing because you saved everything on your computor to your exsternal hard drive you can get one at best buy:)Hugs Darcy

I vote for the external hard drive. It will give you some peace of mind to know your photos are saved somewhere should your trusty Mac crash. Your Mac will pick up some speed without so many files on it, too.

I've owned four Macs a good many years and only one simply died.

I vote for the external hard drive also, it makes life much easier.

First the lape robe is great. Love the color and I would surmise that your dad will use it. I vote for the external hard drive. Easy to use and it holds a lot.

i was lucky enough to win a nice sized external hard drive this past winter and love it! It even allows hubby to store songs along with my photos...and compact!
Kathy,

I'm beginning to think we live parallel lives. My Mac has over 10,000 photos on it. I mentioned to my computer-geek son that I was very nervous about it crashing one day and he bought me an external hard drive for Mother's Day. He backed up everything from my computer onto it and showed me how to update the backup every week. It's easy to do. I also plan to move some of my older photos to the hard drive in a separate place and delete them from my computer.

I plan on knitting my Dad a lap shawl and I know he'll use it. My mom knitted one for herself and he has confiscated it. We grew up with a gun cabinet in the house, too.

Lets see what else we have going in common. I love it. Does you left arm hurt in anywaY?

Did you just get a hairtrim this week?

Did you have a campfire or two this week?

The external hard drive is the best! DS the bird photog uses one to back up his bird photos. I use Carbonite an online service because it also backs up my business files.

I do believe your father will use the lap robe especially if the house is usually cold. He will love it when he gets used to ti!!

It would be best to make a copy of your photos on cd-rom. This way they are easy accessible.

Now is the time to be looking for good deals on external hard drives with all of the back to school specials.

not that you need it, but I'll be one more comment that says you need an external hard drive. they have cheap ones, they're easy to update, it's so lovely to have your files safe and saved there, and you can even get smaller ones that are easy to take with you wherever you need :) I use one with my mac, and I don't know what I'd do without it!

THanks EVERYONE of you for the advice. EHD will be forthcoming. BUt I told Fireman it does not constitute a birthday present.

He says he's thinking of getting me something I'd never expect. Really? THis could be fun!

As for the EHD, I'm already saving for one. I have 2 dollars in the kitty! I love to save for something.

Do a double back up...we back up photos on CD's and our external hard drive.

My daughter knocked my external hard drive off the counter while it was on and it died with all the photos. If I did not have the CD back ups I would have lost all the photos.

I am the ultimate computer geek and a birder who takes photos of birds all the time.

Everyone has suggested an EHD and that is what I use too, but you know about wearing both a belt AND suspenders, well I also burn them onto DVDs - they hold MUCH more than a CD. Much more. And, if you have a MAC of even relatively recent vintage then you'll have a DVD burner built in. Lucky you. You can do it right now and not have to save up.

Now off to answer another question for the contest

Get an external hard drive - I like Western Digital. They run somewhere between $100-150. It will free up your hard drive and be a great back up!

I also vote for external hard drive. They are fairly cheap for one that should last the rest of your life (although with technology progressing, chances are you *will* need another one....)

I have an external hard drive and I back up everything on dvds. I'm also (eventually) going to use something like Carbonite to store things on, since they're backed up by other sites and it's pretty certain they won't lose anything.

But then, I'm ocd like that! I learned the hard way; not only did we lost all of my granddaughter's newborn photos, we then proceeded to lose all of her baby brother's as well!!!
