Shawl Progress on Vacation

The Mac'n Me Ruffled Shawl grew 10 inches on vacation. I think my girth grew about that too. We stay at the WIldcat Lodge in Boulder Junction where owner and chef Tim France feeds us wonderfully all week. I love American Plan.

We were measuring the bass we caught with a knitting tape measure for awhile. Fireman made the fishing board with a 17 inch large mouth. Then we misplaced the tape, and so I used a knitting pattern in a plastic cover for measurement. It was your basic 8 and a half by 11 inch paper. All of the fish were larger than the 11 inch size by a good bit. Sometimes the fisherman is so glad to have the knitter aboard.

There was a tiny finger injury on the first day, due to a fish hook mishap. It is on my right index finger, but it isn't even causing a pause in the knitting. What does cause some pauses in my knitting is a needle issue. . My Kollage square needles are wearing at the join on one needle side. It is causing the yarn to split and snag at that spot. Then the yarn makes its way under several stitches as if I were cabeling back. Can you imagine this? No real harm done so far. Yet it is happening more frequently. I think Im going to contact the company.

I wonder if anyone has had this Other issue: when you get to the end of a skein of yarn, how do you estimate whether you have enough left to start one more row and be able to make it to the end without running out? Any tricks?

Tomorrow: let me indulge and share some photos with you, pre and post mishap!

No tricks, just dumb luck. About half the time I have enough yarn to finish one more row. Sounds like you had a blast.

Hi,

To measure how much yarn you need for a row, you need about 3 and a half times the length of knitted row. Usually I have enough.

Hope that helps!

Much like Rowan I measure 4 times the length of the knitting row. This gives me enough to weave in the ends and allow for yo, cables, etc. This works for me. :)
I rely on dumb luck. And usually that doesn't work very well, LOL. The others have a much more reliable method it seems. I'm going to remember the 4x suggestion I think

on the needle wearing issue: I was in a shop a few weeks back and was looking at the square needles having not tried them yet. The ladies were super cool and informed me of this problem but said any time now the company is releasing a new designed needle that the connection is supposed to no longer have this problem. I thought that was nice of them to let me know not to buy them yet.

When I get near the end of the skein and I know I have enough yarn left for one row, but wonder whether I have enough for two...I fold the remaining yarn in half and tie a loose overhand knot, then I knit a row. If I don't reach the knot, then I can do another row. If I do reach the knot, then I know that I cannot do another full row. Works every time.

Glad to hear the vacation was everything you wished for and needed! I have always heard that the yarn needs to be 3 times the row length but 3 1/2 or 4 as Gayle and Rowan suggested sounds good to me. Also glad that the camera made it through the dunking!

Knitters are so ingenious. Nothing better than a great vacation with great food.
